Here at Sculpt Medi Spa in Calgary, we’re in the business of helping our clients achieve their quest to look and feel their best. Oftentimes, eliminating and eradicating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is the first mission and we are armed with the expertise and experience to help you attain those results.
There is a common misconception that Botox and facial fillers are one in the same. Although both can effectively rectify fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, these two cosmetic injectables actually work in different ways. Both are delivered via injections but have different uses. Let us explain…
What is Botox?
Botox® Cosmetic is actually a brand of Botulinum toxin. Botox® Cosmetic happens to be the most well-known and tested botulinum toxin product in the marketplace. Manufactured by Allergen and developed after decades of medical research and studies, it is used extensively by medical professionals and is pretty much synonymous with botulinum toxin. Much in the same way that facial tissues are often referred to as “Kleenex”, so is Botox® Cosmetic the name that has replaced the rather hard to pronounce neurotoxin.
How Does Botox Work?
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin which blocks the action of nerves on muscles. This muscle paralysis agent decreases the facial motions which cause fine lines and wrinkles to begin with. From years of expressing ourselves through our face, creases start to form in the areas where we repeatedly furrow our brows or contort our foreheads to make a point. By relaxing these facial muscles, these wrinkles have the opportunity to soften and also the decreased muscle activity helps to prevent further creation of deeper lines in our faces.
Botox® drastically improves the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that are formed when the face is in motion or making an expression, typically appearing in the forehead area, around the eyebrows and in the corners of the eyes (uh hum, crow’s feet). By reducing the activity of targeted muscles, these lines can relax, giving us the appearance of a fresh and youthful look that is wrinkle free minus the need of a facelift.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers fill in lost volume, plumping the skin to help lift sagging areas or folds, and can create structure where necessary for example, helping to shape the nose or redefine the lips. Juvederm® dermal fillers contain bio-identical hyaluronic acid which is a naturally produced sugar in the body to essentially moisturize the skin from within.
How do Fillers Work?
As we age, the natural collagen and elastin in our skin lessens and our cells lose the ability to produce more of these youthful components. Our hyaluronic acid stores diminish as well, leaving our skin less supported and thus creating the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Much like a deflated balloon that’s lost air, our skin without solid cellular support, deflates in a way that causes sagging and wrinkling to appear more prominently.
Dermal fillers inject hyaluronic acid back into the skin to restore lost fullness, smooth out lines and refresh droopy skin. By adding volume to the face, sunken areas regain volume and creases are diminished. Facial fillers are great for static wrinkles, those lines that appear when the face is relaxed and not making an expression.
Typical areas that benefit from dermal fillers include around the nose and around the corners of the mouth where when volume is lost, these areas cave in and cause lines to deepen. By adding fullness to the face, these wrinkles are softened and these folds are eliminated for a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.
Dermal fillers can also be used to reshape, redefine and plump up the lips when volume has been lost or is desired.
Botox and Dermal Fillers for Anti-Aging
Both treatments provide an effective way to combat the signs of aging without the need for surgery and with minimal to zero downtime. Consulting with a medical professional is of the utmost importance when considering either of these treatments to understand the risks and details of these procedures.
Great practitioners will take the whole composition of the face into account to create a subtle, fresh appearance that looks natural – like you just came back from a 10 day Bali yoga retreat. You want an experienced injector who possesses the skill, safety, and expertise to enhance your appearance.
Fortunately, Sculpt Calgary’s clinical director and owner, Jean Muir possesses both a keen eye for artistry and precision and extensive experience helping clients achieve a refreshed and natural appearance via cosmetic injections. As a clinical consultant for Allergan, she taught and demonstrated new techniques and protocols for Juvederm® (fillers) and Botox® cosmetic treatments.
